Agenda

19:00-19:30 Tech talk "Getting what you actually want from conversational AI" by Matt Hall - Scientific Developer and Data Scientist at Equinor

19:30-21:00 Networking

Keynote speaker bio:

Matt Hall is a scientific developer and data scientist at Equinor in Bergen. He has a PhD in geology, and 25 years’ experience in the energy industry. He has worked in exploration and seismic analysis for Statoil, Landmark, and ConocoPhillips, and ran a consulting company for 12 years. Matt has written various articles, talks, Python libraries, and book chapters, and edited 3 books. His dedication and innovation were recently recognized at the Dig X Subsurface conference at which Matt was honored with the esteemed Digital Trailblazer 2024 award, marking yet another milestone in his distinguished career.

Abstract of the talk:

Chat assistants based on language models are simultaneously eloquent, stupid, brilliant, and dangerous. ChatGPT is already being used in scientific research, for example to help write and review papers and even to discover new theorems in mathematics. But these models don't know anything about your own data, and sometimes confabulate or get confused. So how can we safely use these tools for science and engineering? I will start with some basic prompting tricks (chain-of-thought, few-shot prompting) and work our way up to specialized agents and retrieval-augmented generation (also known as RAG). On the way, I will appeal to the community to share its experiences and ask how we can collaborate on industry-specific benchmarks to help us all avoid unsafe models.

The bar at the venue will be open to purchase drinks!

Be part of a vibrant community dedicated to advancing knowledge and collaboration! ✨

Sincerely,

EAGE Local Chapter Stavanger.
